Workshop / "Sex and Reproduction in Marine Algae" 28-30 Janvier 2019
In the context of the ‘Groupement de Recherche International: Diversity, Evolution and Biotechnology of Marine Algae’ (http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/fr/station-biologique-de-roscoff/la-station/projets-europeens/gdri-diversity-evolution-and-biotechnology-marine-algae) we are organizing a workshop on"Sex and Reproduction in Marine Algae", 28-30 January 2019, at the Station Biologique de Roscoff, France.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested in different aspects of algal reproduction (both phytoplankton and macroalgae) to share expertise with diverse approaches. Important goals include:
1) to discuss on how we can gain novel insights into important, yet unresolved evolutionary questions using marine algae as model systems;
2) to identify opportunities, challenges and bottlenecks in the study of mating and genetic systems in algae;
3) to determine how new forms of data (large field population datasets/model system datasets, functional approaches) can be used to make progress in these areas.
4) to debate how we can couple the study of various aspects of the evolution and function of genetic systems, including the evolution of sex and recombination, inbreeding vs. outcrossing and the importance of sex determination systems, in order to pinpoint important parameters to be measured that will later be used in more theoretical/predictive approaches such as regarding the development of breeding programs for the seaweed industry.
During two full days, besides review talks by twenty leading scientists, covering a large panel of expertise (marine genomics, genetics, ecology, microbiology, mathematics, evolution), we deliberately chose to allot time for in-depth discussions that will be organized by topic to ensure effective outcomes for each scientific session. A poster session is also organized.
