background

Frédéric PARTENSKY has a permanent senior scientist position (Directeur de Recherches) at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).

After getting his PhD in Biological Oceanology under Daniel Vaulot's supervision in April 1989 working on the biology of bloom-forming dinoflagellates, he spent 1-year post-doc at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) on the physiological characterization of Prochlorococcus marinus strains under the supervision of William K.W. Li.

FP was then hired at the CNRS in November 1990 and was affected at the Station Biologique of Roscoff, where he spent all his career, enriched with several stays in the USA in the framework of collaborations with American colleagues.

FP is a specialist of marine picocyanobacteria, a major component of oceanic ecosystems. He is interested by their ecology, photophysiology and evolution. As a pioneer in the field of marine genomics, F. Partensky was granted in 2009 the Ocean Sciences Price by the French Academy of Sciences. He authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 6 chapters.
