RESEARCH AXIS
Recent studies have shown an impressive increase in the circulation of infectious agents and in the emergence of epizootics, zoonoses and epidemics. They may result from the introduction of exotic species combined with climate change. This is the case of the marine micro-parasite Perkinsus olseni, accidentally introduced into Europe from Asia in 1972. P. olseni has spread along European coasts infecting both the exotic clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, and the endemic clam, R. decussatus, with consequences ranging from sub-lethal effects to recurrent mortality episodes.
However, recent studies have shown that the situation is more complex as these hosts harbour a wide diversity of microorganisms forming the pathobiome. It could reduce or increase the pathogenicity of this exotic parasite. Often neglected, this compartment probably plays a key role in the virulence of the parasite and therefore in the severity of the diseases it causes.
