Photosymbiosis is a symbiotic relationship between two or more organisms, at least one of which is capable of photosynthesis. Photosymbiosis can cover the full spectrum of trophic interactions from mutualism, parasitism, to kleptoplastidy, and the full spectrum of taxonomic associations (viruses, bacteria, & protists). Our objective is to estimate the relevance of symbiotic associations in the productivity, resilience/connectivity, and recycling capacity of marine planktonic communities.

To understand the nature of specific associations and the capacity of partners to interact (and thus co-evolve) in the oceans, we notably develop automated high-resolution cell imaging coupled with experimental tests using laboratory cultures and co-cultures. In particular, we explore water borne signals mediated during the associations and/or identify molecules underlying specificities of interactions.
