The Orchestre National de Bretagne and the Roscoff Biological Station announce the winners of their 2026 music composition residency
On Thursday, December 11, the Orchestre National de Bretagne and the Roscoff Biological Station announced the two winners of their musical composition residency project, which will take place in Roscoff in 2026.
From nearly 90 applicants, Simone Tolomeo and Séverine Ballon were selected to imagine and create original works inspired by the richness and complexity of marine ecosystems.
Two creations, two worlds
Simone Tolomeo will compose an orchestral work, inspired by observations of living organisms and scientific research conducted at the Roscoff Biological Station.
Séverine Ballon will compose a chamber music piece, the result of a sensitive dialogue between science, sound material, and artistic commitment.
In order to bring these creations to life, the two composers will immerse themselves in the daily lives of the researchers. The residency will also feature mediation sessions and workshops for the general public, scientists, and school groups, promoting encounters between music, science, and the local area.
About the winners
Simone Tolomeo, composer, bandoneonist, and pianist, combines rigor and curiosity in his creations, exploring the links between living creation, aesthetic dialogue, and social engagement. His multifaceted approach promises a vibrant orchestral work.
Séverine Ballon, composer and cellist, combines social commitment with musical research. Her work, marked by daring collaborations, will give rise to a new chamber music piece.
