Research Interests

Meiofaunal communities are among the most diverse groups of organisms on the planet and are ideal ecological indicators and sentinels for ecosystem health. Yet only a small fraction of this diversity has been described, and knowledge of their biology and ecology is fragmentary. Due to their high abundance, diversity, wide distribution, relatively fast generation times and rapid metabolic rates, infaunal benthic organisms are one of the best marine bioindicators available for assessing global environmental change. The thesis aims to find new methods and technologies and to test and develop 3D imaging for the description of microscopic organisms of the sedimentary fauna by providing quantitative and functional data needed for impact studies, building a reference image dataset and also defining which key species and functional traits are needed to understand changes in the marine environment, whether natural or anthropogenic, focusing on different impacted ecosystems from the coast to the deep sea.
