Exploring the origins, spread and evolution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) in the environment is critical to understand and control the processes leading to the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance in pathogens. During his PhD, Rubén studies the resistance to multiple antibiotics as a common trait in V. crassostreae strains isolated from the environment. The objective of the project is to understand the diversity, mechanisms and evolution of antibiotic resistance in Vibrio and determine if the oysters act as a hotspot for Horizontal Gene Transfers.
