POSITION: Curator of Diatoms ANNOUNCEMENT NUMBER: 937
ISSUE DATE: September 25, 2006 CLOSING DATE: Open Until Filled
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia invites applications for a career-track position as Curator of Diatoms. The successful applicant will establish and maintain an internationally-recognized program of externally funded research in systematics, taxonomy, evolution, ecology or related disciplines. They will have curatorial oversight of the Academy's Diatom Herbarium (the largest in North America), and work to develop its resources, increase its visibility, and promote its use by the scientific community. Support toward these efforts is available from the Frank and Ruth Patrick Fund, but the curator will also need to obtain grant funding for collection improvements as well as their own research program.
The curator will be expected to support the Phycology Section in the Academy's Patrick Center for Environmental Research by providing taxonomic expertise for projects that use diatoms for environmental research and to seek opportunities to collaborate with other Academy scientists.
A Ph.D. degree and demonstrated expertise in diatom taxonomy and systematics are essential. Post-doctoral experience, familiarity with the use and maintenance of diatom collections, and use of diatoms as environmental indicators, are desirable.
Position available January 1, 2007 with application review beginning on Nov 15, 2006. Salary is commensurate with experience. For further information regarding this position please contact Dr. Don Charles (

Additional information regarding funding.
Approximately half of the salary for the position will be provided by the Frank and Ruth Patrick Fund (established 2003). This is a permanent endowment fund restricted to support of diatom systematics and ecology projects at the Academy, and in particular the continuation and maintenance of the "Frank and Ruth Patrick New Species Catalog of Diatoms." It is expected that remaining salary will come primarily from new grants and contracts awarded to the applicant, and from projects within the PCER Phycology Section. Responsibilities as part of Phycology Section projects include providing taxonomic expertise for species identifications, promoting taxonomic consistency among diatom analysts, QA/QC, organizing taxonomic workshops and maintaining up-to-date species lists. Though long-term collaboration on Phycology Section projects is encouraged, applicants are expected to obtain external funding for their own independent research program. Initial reliance on Phycology Section projects to help cover salary should decrease as new external funding is received.
