Professeur Associé à la Pontificia Universidad de Chile (UC)

Main interests

My research lines are the Genetics of Marine Populations and Evolutionary Ecology. My research is focused on the ecological and evolutionary aspects of dispersal and adaptation to environmental heterogeneity in marine organisms, and aims at understanding the natural and anthropogenic processes that affect population resilience.

In the framework of population genetics, I employ as the main tool the study of intra-specific genetic diversity, using molecular markers to infer population parameters such as connectivity, evolutionary history, changes in population size due to natural (e.g. glaciations or El Niño events) or human-induced disasters (e.g. overexploitation or environmental contamination). I am also interested in studying reproductive aspects (in the reproductive system) of algae, since it determine to a large extent their population and genetic diversity dynamics, that is their potential evolution.

My efforts are focused on the development of multidisciplinary approaches, combining population genetics with demography, reproduction biology and ecology and population experimental ecology. This is carried out in collaboration with national and international researchers, particularly in the framework of the International Associated Laboratory (LIA-DIAMS) created between the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientific (CNRS, France) and the Pierre and Marie Curie University – Paris (UPMC, France). Research at LIA-DIAMS is mainly focused on the Dispersion and Adaptation of Marine Species.
