PhD project : Dinoflagellate chemical sensing and intra-& inter-species communication during parasitic attack (DINOSENS)

The objective of my PhD project is to better understand the role of chemical signals during host-parasite interaction. This is an interdisciplinary project, associating biology and chemistry wich is done in collaboration between three laboratories: ECOMAP in Roscoff, France, Institute for Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry Friedrich Schiller Universitat, Jena, Germany and Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. My traget models are the Syndiniales parasite Amoebophrya infecting blooming dinoflagellates. Both are ubiquitous in the ocean, and play important ecological roles as biocontrol and primary producers, respectively. To unveil that a chemical communication occurs betwen these two partners, I am exploring  modifications in the physiological traits and metabolomic profiles induced before the physical contact of the two partners by molecular sensing. If possible, I will also characterize the molecule(s) responsible for such effects.
