QTL mapping and relationships between crops and natural populations in the kelp Saccharina latissima.

A two-year postdoctoral research position is available immediately at the Roscoff Marine Laboratory, UMI “Evolutionary Biology and Ecology of Algae” in France. The aim of the project is to develop a genetic map and QTLs for traits related with growth characteristics, biomolecule content (e.g. lipids, polysaccharides, proteins, amino acids) and stress and disease resistance in the brown alga Saccharina latissima. The aim of the project is also to study the relationships between crops and populations established in the wild in this recently cultivated kelp species This position is funded in the context of the EU GENIALG project (H2020-EU-BG-01-2016, ID 727892).

These approaches will be developed specifically for S. latissima using data generated by the GENIALG project but will also take advantage of currently available genomic sequence data for this species and the sister species S. japonica (Ye et al., 2015, Nature communications, 6), and of additional genomic data that will be generated by the recently funded French "Phaeoexplorer" project.

Applicants must have a PhD in population genomics and in plant or animal breeding. They must have a good background in QTL analyses, molecular biology and bio-informatics techniques applied to gene association studies. No specific experience on algae or marine species is necessary.

Applications are accepted until 22 September, 2017 and should include a CV together with a description of research experience, relevant publications and the names of two referees (with their email). Selected candidates will be interviewed from the 4 to the 6 of October 2017. The position will began mid- November 2017.

This is a collaborative project between the Algal Genetics Group (http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/en/team-algal-genetics) and the Evolutionary Biology and Marine Diversity Group (http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/en/evolutionary-biology-and-ecology-algae)

Salary will be 2250 € to 2500€ per month (net) depending on experience.

Applications should be sent to Myriam Valero (valero@sb-roscoff.fr), Mark Cock (cock@sb-roscoff.fr) & Barbara Raffenne (barbara.raffenne@sb-roscoff.fr) in CC. We prefer applications in electronic form.
