The Roscoff Biological Station
We are a cutting-edge marine biology and ecology laboratory with nearly 200 scientists working to study marine organisms and understand the functioning of complex and dynamic marine ecosystems, the risks in a rapidly changing world, and the functioning and evolution of life.
Explore, Understand, Share — to Preserve Marine Ecosystems
Beyond our cutting-edge research in the field of marine sciences worldwide, the sharing of knowledge and the promotion of positive change to address current challenges in marine environment preservation lie at the heart of our commitment.
Our work is guided by our core values: excellence, equality, inclusion, innovation, the training of the next generation of leading scientists, the protection of marine life and the environment, and global cooperation.
Our News
Our Research
Our research is dedicated to the study of the biology of marine organisms (microbes, macroalgae, microalgae, metazoans) and the functioning of ocean ecosystems, with a particular focus on understanding the evolution of life and the adaptation of marine organisms to global change.
Biodiversity
With over 4,000 recorded animal and plant species, the Roscoff Biological Station benefits from an exceptional environment for exploring marine biodiversity.
Research
From the organism to the ecosystem, and from the coastal environment to the global ocean, our work is supported by strong expertise in marine genomics.
Impact
Current major scientific questions lie at the heart of our research: the state of biodiversity, global change, data modeling and sharing, and more.

Observe to Understand and Preserve Coastal Ecosystems
Understanding the evolution of coastal ecosystems in the context of climate change and biodiversity loss is now a crucial preservation challenge. In response to this major issue, we participate in observation and monitoring programs and in the deployment of enhanced observatories at national and European scales.
