This page will present data on the caracterisation of cultures as this part of the project progresses.  In particular you can download the full Roscoff Culture Collection database that contains not only basic information on each strain, but also phenotypical (pictures, pigments, flow cytometry) and genetical (RFLP patterns) data.  The catalog can also be downloaded as a pdf file with images and other data. The list of culture currently characterized can be downloaded as a Excel worksheet.

Big non-motile green, "planktonic and growing on tube wall.
Heterotrophic flagellat present.

RCC 330 high temp
Non-motile, brown-yellow, several chloroplasts, makes aggregates.
Heterotrophic flagellate present.
Similar to RCC 333
Embedded for thin-sectionning Dec. 00, pellet OK.

RCC 331 high temp
Not growing well.
2 types of flagellates, at least one of them heterotrophic

Flagellate with chloroplasts, 2 flagella; one short, other with mastigonemes.Chrysophyte.
EM neg; L 468

Not growing well. Non-motile, making yellow-brown aggregates.

2 equal to subequal flagella, 2 chloroplasts. Probably a prymnesiophyte, but no scales observed in EM. Cf. Dicrateria?

RCC 354 medium temp Chrysochromulina rotalis. Paraphysomonas cf. imbricata In the picture of RCC 354 you can see the scales of Chrysochromulina rotalis, in the lower right corner you see the scales of Paraphysomonas cf imperforata. EM neg: L426-427

RCC 355 medium temp Yellow-brownish, 2 kloroplasts, 2 flagella; one long with mastigonemes one short with probably elongated central microtubuli. Makes aggregates. Heterotrophic flagellat present. EMneg; L 428, 454-456. A closer examination of e.g. the long flagellum may reveal that this is Bolodimonas.

Eupico, non-motile, olive-green.
No scales present in EM. Embedded dec. 00, very small pellet.

RCC 357 medium temp
Non-motile and some with 1 flagellum, yellow-greenish, cf. Pelagococcus
Embedded dec. 00, pellet OK.

Non-motile (ca 3 microns), many green (blueish) chloroplasts.

Nonmotile, green cells ca 8 microns.

Bathycoccus prasinos (Drebes 6 low light, Drebes 2 high light).
Phaeocystis globosa (Drebes 3 high light).
Red Synechococus sp. (Drebes 1 high light).
Micromonas pusilla (IMR 4 low light)

Examination of cultures
"Drebes 3 high light (h.l.)" - Phaeocystis globosa.
"Drebes 1 h.l." Red Synechococcus + colourless flagellate. Grows slowly.
"Drebes 2 h.l." - non motile pico, Bathycoccus prasinos.
"Drebes 2 low light (l.l.)." Mixed culture. Emiliania huxleyi, Phaeocystis sp. ,flagellate (Dicrateria-like), diatom.
"Drebes 6 l.l." -B. prasinos. EM neg: L 453.
"IMR 2 l.l." - non motil pico + 2 types of colourless flagellates. Grows very slowly.
"IMR 4 l.l." Micromonas pusilla , may be also pico non-motile. Grows slowly.
