GRC Conference Business Session

During the conference week, most likely on Wednesday evening, everyone will be invited to attend a short business session with the following tasks.

  • WILL THERE BE A REQUEST FOR A SUCCESSOR CONFERENCE?
    • Discuss, vote and record the vote
  • SHOULD THERE BE A CHANGE OF CONFERENCE THEME OR DIRECTION?
    • Suggestions to be given to the new Chair for speakers and topics
  • ELECTION OF THE NEW VICE-CHAIR
    • All Conferences must have a Vice-Chair who will succeed as Chair
    • At least two nominations from a nominating committee
    • Solicit nominations from the floor
    • Nominees may give a short statement if they desire
  • ELECTION BY BALLOT
  • ELECTION OF CONFERENCE REPRESENTATIVE ON THE GRC COUNCIL
Planning the next Marine Microbes Conferences

As most of you know, the Gordon Research Conference you will be attending is the first one being held in a new series entitled “Marine Microbes”. In the prospectus for this series, it is proposed that this conference shall meet once every 2 years under a different subject area of this field, at a GRC﷓sanctioned site alternating between Europe and USA. A list of these sites is appended below. The matter on which a decision must be made is whether “Marine Microbes” will in fact continue into the future according to the prospectus. If the vote is in favour, then the conferees in attendance at Roscoff will be required to elect both the Chair and Vice-Chair for the 2006 USA meeting. It is understood that the 2006 Vice-Chair will in fact be the Chair for the 2008 Europe meeting. At his or her own discretion, the elected Chair may appoint a Co-Chair who serves to widen the conference network. For clarification, the “Picophytoplankton” meeting of “Marine Microbes” has a Chair (Vaulot) and Co-Chair (Li), but no Vice-Chair since no prior forum existed to elect such a person.

Although it might be preferable for practical reasons that the Chair would be from North America and the Vice-Chair from Europe, this is by no mean a strong constraint and everyone is encouraged to consider the idea. It is important that attendants potentially interested in chairing or vice-chairing the next Marine Microbe GRC think about it ahead of the meeting and eventually contact either Daniel or Bill for further information.
