Editorial - Volume 50 - Number 1
The quaterly journal CBM – Cahiers de Biologie Marine, is now coming in its 50th year of life. It has been founded in early1960 by the professor Georges Teissier, director of the Station Biologique de Roscoff with the aim of studying all the aspects of marine organisms and their natural environment. Pr. G. Teissier wanted to allow researchers to publish very diverse aspects of marine biology. At that time, international collaboration was not as frequent as today and G. Teissier wanted to increase these exchanges. Whereas most scientists were still publishing in their native language, he offered the opportunity to publish in a French journal in any language as long as a French abstract accompanied the article.
Research in marine biology has known many developments since 1960. So did diverse ways of communication between scientists. English is now the world wide scientific language and CBM – Cahiers de Biologie Marine is now exclusively published in English, but still with a French abstract. Numerous scientific journals on diverse aspects of marine biology have appeared since then, several have also disappeared. CBM – Cahiers de Biologie Marine does not expect to keep up with the most prestigious journals dealing with diverse aspects of marine biology. However, it remains true to its former ambitions and still offers its readers a large diversity of topics. Systematics has always an important place within the journal but numerous other topics are published including recent aspects such as molecular phylogeny for example.
CBM – Cahiers de Biologie Marine has also evolved: it is now available on line. 10 years of archives are available for subscribers. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the journal, we are going to add some old volumes in the on-line archives and you will discover at the end of each volume a brief focus on a marine species. For this volume (50-1), we focussed on the acoel Symsagittifera roscoffensis (Graff, 1891), an emblematic species for the Station Biologique de Roscoff, and that has been the subject of a paper in the volume 1-2 (1960) of CBM – Cahiers de Biologie Marine.
Finally, I would like to conclude by wishing to this journal 50 more years to serve research in marine biology.
Pr. Dominique Davoult
Scientific editor of CBM – Cahiers de Biologie Marine
